Hiroshi Mitani is a Professor of Area Studies at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tokyo, and holds a PhD in Humanities and Sociology from the University of Tokyo. Prof. Mitani specializes in modern Japanese history, especially the Meiji Restoration, and explores topics such as nationalism, revolution, and democratization through modern East Asian history and comparative history. Aside from writing on history, his research also includes seeking ways to compare Japan’s experience to those of other nations and to mitigate the conflict over recognition and memory of history between Japan and its neighboring nations.
